Category: Let's talk
Hi guys,
I amm writing yet another article on the latest bombings in Bali that took place on October 1, 2005, and I was wondering what everyone's general perceptions of Muslims are? Is anyone on these boards a Muslim? If so, have you experienced any hatred or racism, or any othe rform of descrimination since the attacks in Bali? What is your stance on the issue as a Muslim? (Note that I mean no offense by such general questions, but I need everyone's opinion, ASAP, and owuld be greatly interested on a Muslim perspective as I have only been able to find press releases from organisations, and my post on a Muslim forum has thus far been unanswered.
Thanks guys.
Jess.
Ok, I'm no moslem, however, moslems are people like the rest of us. We should not generalise with them, as in all things, not all are the same. Terrorism goes on more with Moslems, or so it seems, but is not exclusive to them. Do we in britain hate the irish the way some hate Moslems? I don't think so. We have to hate terrorism and remember that there are milions of perfectly nice normal Moslems out there too.
Thanks for that, BlackBird, much appreciated.
As I understand it, it's not your everyday common majority Muslim who is performing or advocating these acts of terror. These are extremists who have some kind of axe to grind. So judging all Muslims by these small bands of terrorists would be like saying all CHristians are bad because a few extremists bent on doing God's work would blow up an abortion clinic or commit some kind of hate crime.
thanks, Labyrinth!
A repost to fix a few corrections and formatting:
You have asked the questions, “Is anyone on these boards a Muslim? If so, have you experienced any hatred or racism, or any other form of descrimination since the attacks in Bali?” I will attempt to give answer to your question from not so much the specified situation mentioned, that being the attacks in Bali rather from a more so generalized viewpoint that is still personal in nature. Allow for me to explain. First in answer to your question I will reply and say I am not of the Muslim faith yet this does not prohibit me from inter-study and inter-appreciation of various faiths and so much so that Yes, I have experienced the hatred of racism. Back a few years ago I was a member of a “We the People Coalition Group” that had as an overall theme, ‘The Struggle Continues’ and continues whether a person is Black, White, Asian, Latino, American Indian, male, female, The Blind, Youth, The Aged, and so on. Some members of our group were more vocal than others though all from time to time would address City Council with various concerns whether to further provide funding for local Community Parks, to the providing of the funding necessary to provide the Library with computers having screen readers etc.., to the addressing of the issues of the separation of church and state as provided for by the Constitution. Our group took the view that given we felt there was violation in that prayers were offered before the start of each Council meeting that then to be fair there needed to be representation from all the various religious groups present within our local community. As it was it seemed ONLY ministers of the Protestant faith were permitted while as our group desired that on a rotating basis there also be permitted a representative from the Catholic faith, as well as a Rabbi, a Muslim Leader, a Buddhist Monk, as well as representatives from Hinduism, Taoism/Confucianism, and so forth. Well, there was one particular member of our community who was Jew by birth and whether by religion this I can not be certain of for oft times the line wavers. Anyhow he got himself terribly upset with myself and a gentleman member of our group when we would continually discuss matters with a Muslim member/friend of our group and so much so that he took it upon himself that to rather than verbally confront us personally he would take matters into his own hands and approached members of our families to physically attack and beat them up. Both my youngest son and the gentleman I have mentioned, well, his wife and sons too were attacked. Do I hold ought against all Jews due to this described situation, my answer is “No,” only against the one who sought to do damage. Likewise in any and all matters the ones who do actual damage are the ones who need to be held responsible and to lay charges against all of a particular group this is not right.
oh honestly! muslims are just like the rest of us. we should not judge them like you don't judge anyone here on the zone do you? there you go then!
I feel badly for the Muslim community they have a mountain to climb to rebuild trust with britian. The true Muslims are appalled by the actions of Al Qaeda, and the brainwashing muslim clerics so there is hope..however, can we honestly say we are any better or worse, not from what I have seen here..if any good comes from the disaster in Pakistan I hope trhat the world looks more favourably on the Muslim comunity, because no country has done more, to bring members of Al Qaeada to justice than Pakistan.
Here is my perception of Muslims. There are several types of Muslims. There are the deesent ones who are secular, intigrate with others from different backgrounds, who in fact it would be difficult to tell what religion they were, unless it was ramadam or ead, rather like a few of my best friends. There are those who are strict about their religion and don't promote secularism in their families and try to make sure that nothing happens within their families which violate their Islamic values. Unfortunately, there is a group of Islamic Fascists. These are the type of people who care about what's happening in Iraq, Palestine, and Afghanistan, simply because Muslims are affected. I don't recall huge amounts of catholics from Poland for example, going over to Ireland to join the IRA! What must be understud though, is that some Muslims are very poorly educated. They are the ones Islamic terorist organisations pray on. They are easy to recruit. The Terrorists use Iraq as an excuse for their actions beause by doing so, they'll make people from countries involved in the coalision more angry about the war. This usually works. Many members of terror organisations with the exception to those based in Palestine, are probably not aware of the full objectives of them. Al-Quaeda wants to unite all the places which have been ruled by Muslims under one Islamic superstate, they want to distroy Israel, and once that's achieved, I'm sure they'll have other objectives against America and other "infidel" lands. Indonesia just happens to be part of the lands they want to unify, and the government there, is too moderate for their liking. Alsok, Australia has acted in ways these groups would describe as anti-Islamic. Terrorists justify attacking civilians of democracies by blaming them for putting governments in power. They did this especially well in Spain before the Spannish elections and the people there gave in! A lot of their recruits may simpathise with one of their courses, such as Iraq but not the wider objective. However, they may not be aware of those wider objectives. Not all Muslims who are against the war in Iraq are against it because Muslims are affected, and I never said otherwise. Some secular Muslims (the best kind) are against it for other reasons or are in favour of it. Law-abiding Muslims shouldn't be treated differently to anyone else. I believe that there needs to be more understanding of all cultures in multi-ethnic societies and that should come through education. I don't think fascism should be tollerated whether it's Islamic fascism or Nazi fascism and for the good of society, it's best that fascists of all sides are locked up! I think dictatorial governments who refuse to reform should not be traded with by any democratic nation and all links to them should be cut off unless they make a significant contribution to helping democracy in the war on terror.
I lived with muslems for most of my life many years ago. There are some good, and some bad. That, honestly, is all I will say about them on this board. Laters!
here in Malaysia, we have 3 major races and 3 major relagion. personally i'm free of any relagion, , and i don't have any problem with muslim. as many of the people have said, the incedent happen not cause of muslim but cause of Terrorism,. but unfortunate enough they use muslim and the study of their believe as the reason of it. as far as i understand, the real study and philosophy of muslim did not practice on Terrorism
but practice pretty much on peace and harmony.
yep agree with everyone here. there are good and bad eggs in all societies/cultures unfortunately. Stargate, this board post wasn't an attack as she clearly stated. She just wanted feedback.
I was watching Oprah the other day about these kinds of attacks and someone made a good point. When the Oaklahoma (excuse spelling please) bombings took place, no-one seemed to all of a sudden be on this rampage to "hate" all white people. yet some seem very quick to generalize when Moozlems (and other such cultures) committ their crimes.
Rd I heard from a panoramma documentary that some americans were relieved and even proud!? to know that the bomber was one of their own, how screwed up can these people get..At least the Londoners had the sense to feel ashamed and stunned.
